QUALITY MATTERS

WITH MIKE DELISI AND AMANDA BROWN

When I was curating the content for Season 2 of Science in the Mall, Y’all, I wanted to showcase some of the students that have gone through ACC’s Biotech program and had done internships at ABI to take a look at where they landed professionally. I paired them up based on who I thought would make for fun conversations. It was an unintended bonus to listen in on the discussion between Amanda Brown and Mike Delisi, as their current roles, while at different companies, put them in the position to razz each other. Amanda has worked in quality assurance and quality control since leaving ACC. The job requires her to be the enforcer of all the rules put forth by regulatory bodies regarding the process and procedures used in manufacturing products. Mike works in downstream manufacturing and is one of those people that Amanda-like people police. The playful banter is great. Between that and their beef stew analogy to the protein purification process, it’s a really fun episode. It’s also pretty educational. If you listened to the prior episodes with Marcia McCallum, you learned a bit about upstream processing. Now, Mike goes into what is involved once Marcia’s team hands over the product of their work to the downstream processing team. The jobs and skill sets are different, and students exploring career paths will benefit from hearing about what is involved in the day to day of both jobs. And, as the overseer of compliance for both upstream and downstream, hearing about what makes Amanda good at her job was super enlightening. I encourage people interested in a career in biotechnology, as well as those that just enjoy peeking behind the curtain of processes, such as how drugs are manufactured, to listen in.Nancy LyonDirector
